| North Campus Neighborhood Association CRIME ALERT January 2012
Dear Neighbors,
Once
again, it seems like crime is rising in our neighborhood. Once again,
we are being targeted. Two months ago, it was Altura Park, last month,
it was Netherwood, and this month, the thieves have returned to North
Campus.
Unfortunately,
suspects are going door to door, oftentimes ringing the doorbell first,
then breaking in and stealing small items, particularly computers,
jewelry, and cash.
We
need your help. We need you all to be alert. Please pay attention to
what is happening on your street. Talk to your neighbors. PLEASE call 242-COPS if you see behavior which seems suspect to you! This will increase patrols in our neighborhood. If we all watch out for one another, we can make a difference.
We also need help expanding our neighborhood watch program to reach every single block in our association.
Would
you be interested in heading up your block's neighborhood watch
program, or in helping to recruit other block captains? We need
volunteers from across our neighborhood!
If you are willing to make a difference, please contact Patricia Comer by email at trishcomer@gmail.com
Thank you! Sara Koplik President, NCNA

Status of TREES on Golf Course
Q: Could you please address the cutting down of the large, old trees (cottonwoods?) on the golf course? How many, were they all diseased, will they be replaced etc.
A: Please read the recent NCNA Winter Update which discusses the trimming and removal of golf course trees. In addition, here is a statement from NCNA Vice President, Tim Davis:
The North Course has suffered from benign neglect for many years. Our estimation is that there has been little work done on the trees for over 20 years. We collaborated with Mt West to have pruning and removal done, based upon the following criteria: 1. Life safety (making sure that those trees that had been damaged or diseased over the past years, were either trimmed back to healthy stock or removed if beyond a reasonable state of being) 2. Focus on the the area’s primary function which is a golf course (this land exists as a green space because it is a golf course and the income of the golf course offsets the cost of maintaining the lands as a green space and community asset) 3. Tees and greens were the primary areas that were trimmed in this effort, as these are the areas that people congregate at for both golfing and other activities There were approximately 15-20 trees removed, and over 100 that were pruned. We owe a huge thanks to Mountain West Golfscapes for their contribution of time, people and equipment to make this the success that it is. As for the replacement of the trees that were removed, this will be a community effort. Given the scarce resources that UNM has at this time, NCNA will lead an effort to raise funds, and coordinate the next steps of re-stocking the tree inventory on the course [our "Tree Party" effort]. Our goal will be to raise a minimum of 25,000 dollars this spring and summer, and look to begin replanting in the late Fall and Winter of 2011-2012.
We are looking for folks to help with the next steps. Let us know if you'd like to contribute funds or to volunteer. There is still much to be done.

| CALLING ALL CITIZENS OF ALBUQUERQUE!!
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is based on a simple observation: in major emergencies, professional emergency services are overloaded immediately.
|
CERT
is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety, and doing
the greatest good for the greatest number of people. Programs such as CERT give opportunities for ordinary citizens to give something back to their community.
CERT
is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster
situations where citizens will be initially on their own and their
actions can make a difference in helping others.
WHAT DOES CERT TRAINING OFFER? Disaster Preparedness Fire Safety Disasters Medical Operations Triage and Treating Life Threatening Injuries Assessment, Treatment and Hygiene Light Search and Rescue Team Organization Disaster Psychology Terrorism and CERT
Next class will be held Friday, June 12, 2009 thru Sunday, June 14, 2009.

Hey, Neighbors! EARTH HOUR - Saturday, March 28, 2009 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Turn out. Take action.
City Hall, Wells Fargo, the Sierra Club and others want people to turn off the lights for an hour this month to help save energy. The groups are participating in “Earth Hour” from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2009 - the same time that people across the world will be encouraged to turn off devices they don’t need. Supporters say it’s a symbolic gesture demonstrating humanity’s capacity to conserve energy.
“We have to change and work together,” Mayor Martin Chávez said Thursday at a news conference.
Wells Fargo will turn off its signature green lights Downtown for the hour. The Sierra Club will distribute energy-efficient light bulbs. And City Hall will power down, except for public-safety functions. Supporters encourage people to turn off unnecessary lights, televisions and monitors.
Download and print these PDF flyers and stickers!

To: Mr. Kevin Troutman Air Quality Division Environmental Health Department 11850 Sunset Gardens SW Albuquerque NM 87121
Re: Air Quality Authority to Construct Permit #0953-M2
Dear Mr. Troutman,
I
just learned that the University of New Mexico Hospital proposes
changing its air quality permit to allow for greater emissions from new
boilers and generators. As a resident of Albuquerque and someone
who enjoys using the North UNM Golf Course for recreation and exercise,
I am very concerned about the potential of our air quality
diminishing. This may harm me directly. Clean air protects the health
and well-being of our entire community. If UNM is proposing to emit
more pollutants, what is its plan to off-set these changes? I
respectfully request a public hearing in order to understand these
proposed changes more completely.
Thank you very much,

July 2008 Update: "More Construction, More Pollutants" Sara Koplik President, North Campus Neighborhood Association
[excerpts]
"UNMH has asked the City for permission to change its Air Quality Permit, and increase the amount of pollutants it emits. If
you could take a few minutes from your day to print out and send a
letter by US Post (with a $.42 stamp) to Albuquerque’s Environmental
Health Department, we may be able to learn far more about UNM’s construction projects and their long-reaching effects." ...
"The
reason that UNMH had to submit a request to the city is because this
project exceeds the threshold specified for air quality emissions in
Albuquerque. UNMH would like to add 3 boilers and 5 generators to
their facility. The expected impact of this upgrade would be an
increase in emissions of 21.6 tons per year of carbon monoxide, 64.5
tons per year of nitrogen oxides, 2.18 tons per year of non-methane
hydrocarbons, 10.66 tons per year of sulfur oxides and 2.6 tons per
year of total suspended particulates." ...
